The number the drawing needs

Finished thickness, not cushion thickness

A banquette is joinery with upholstery sitting on it, and the joinery gets cut first. Your section fixes the seat height, the nosing and the reveal between cushion and carcass long before anybody has chosen a foam. The number that matters is therefore the finished, compressed thickness — because a 100mm cushion is not 100mm with a person on it, and a 15mm error in that assumption is a detail that cannot be corrected later without re-cutting the millwork. Ask us for it at detail stage and it costs a phone call.

Banquettes, window seats and fitted benches

Furniture repair for architects NJ projects involve is rarely a loose chair. It is the seating drawn into the building, which is also the seating nobody can replace later without a joiner.

Where upholstery meets the drawing

Two trades, one tolerance

The joiner works to a millimetre and upholstery compresses. That mismatch is where built-in seating goes wrong, and it is solved at drawing stage or not at all.

Decide at detail stage

  • A seat frame with springs and sound foam
Support typeWebbing, springs or solid deck — each gives a different finished height.
  • Cushion foam being replaced under contract covers
Foam densityDensity changes compression, so it changes your section.

Decide before closing up

  • Banquette bases with new foam on plywood carcasses
Access for laterIf the pad cannot come out, the next recover means a joiner.
  • A vinyl seat corner stretched over foam
Corner treatmentA tight external corner needs material allowance the carcass must leave.
How it works

Detail, confirm, build, upholster

  1. Send the section

At detail stage, not at handover. A sketch is enough.

  2. We give the numbers

Compressed height, reveal and material allowance for the intended build.

  3. Joinery goes in

Built to a dimension that already accounts for the upholstery.

  4. Upholstered to fit

And designed so the pad can be removed and recovered in ten years.

Where this sits

Before the build, and ten years after it

At design stage this is a dimensions conversation. Later it becomes commercial reupholstery — and whether that is easy or expensive is decided by whether the pad can be lifted out, which is on seating replacement. The compression figures themselves come from foam density.

Questions

Furniture Repair for Architects NJ FAQ

What practices ask at detail stage.

What height should I draw the carcass at?

Tell us the finished seat height you want and the foam you intend, and we will give you the carcass height. Furniture repair for architects NJ practices ask us about is most often this, and it costs nothing to ask early.

Does foam density really change my section?

Yes. A denser foam compresses less, so the same nominal cushion sits higher. That is why the density belongs in the spec, not in the fit-out.

Can the cushions be removable?

They should be. A fixed pad means the next recover needs a joiner as well as an upholsterer, which doubles the cost of a job ten years out.

Do you work from drawings?

Yes, and we would rather have a sketch section early than a finished carcass late.

Can you work on listed or period interiors?

Yes, and conservatively — the restraint case is set out on the antique dealers page.
