What kind of tear?

Four shapes, four approaches

The shape of the opening tells us how it will be closed. Send a close photo and we can usually tell which one it is before quoting a leather tear repair NJ job.

Clean cut in leather
Clean cut
A straight slit from a box cutter or a sharp edge. The two sides still meet, which makes it the neatest to close.
Seam split in leather
Seam split
The stitching or the leather beside it has pulled apart along a seam. Often re-stitched rather than glued.
Star or L-tear in leather
Star or L-tear
Two or more tears meeting at a point, sometimes with a small piece missing. Each flap is laid back and bonded.
Corner tear in leather
Corner tear
A flap torn off a corner or edge with the backing showing. Needs a sub-patch and careful shaping of the edge.

Why it holds

Fixed from behind, not just on top

Leather is a mat of fibers under a thin grain layer. Glue and color on the surface alone will open again the first time someone sits down, so every leather tear repair NJ job we take is built in three layers.

  1. A backing patchA thin canvas or leather patch is slipped under the opening and bonded to the back of the hide, so the tear is held from behind.
  2. Edges glued downLifted edges and loose fibers are flattened onto the patch so nothing curls up again.
  3. Flexible fillerThe gap is filled flush in thin layers and sanded, then grain is pressed in so it reads like the rest of the panel.
How it works

Closing the opening

Fill the Opening
01. Fill the Opening
After the patch is set, filler closes the gap level with the leather.
Match the Color
02. Match the Color
Color mixed to your hide is sprayed and feathered across the panel.
Seal and Check
03. Seal and Check
A topcoat sets the sheen; seams and edges are checked under raking light.
Honest advice

When a repair is not the answer

If the leather around the tear is cracking and peeling everywhere, a patch will hold but the panel next to it will fail soon after. In that case a new panel or a full recover is better value, and we will say so before quoting.

How it happened

Where tears come from

Four situations start most of the leather tear repair NJ calls we take.

Moving and deliveries

Box cutters opening a new delivery and door frames on moving day are behind many clean slits.

Scratch repair →

Pets

A dog jumping off the sofa or a cat kneading the same spot can turn wear into an opening.

Cat scratch repair →

Recliner mechanisms

Footrests and hinges pinch the leather as they fold, and the split starts at the crease.

Recliner repair →

Worn spots giving way

A crack or bare patch left too long finally opens under weight on the seat front.

Can a tear in leather be repaired so it does not show?

Most can be made very hard to find. A backing patch holds the opening, filler levels it and the color is matched to your hide. Leather tear repair NJ clients book from us usually ends up visible only if you know exactly where to look.

Will the repair hold when someone sits on it?

Yes. The patch underneath carries the load, not the filler on top, which is why a tear repaired this way does not reopen with normal use.

Is it better to replace the panel?

For a long tear across a seat, a hole with leather missing, or leather that is cracking everywhere around the tear, a new panel or reupholstery can be the better choice. We tell you which before you book.

Should I use tape or a patch kit until you come?

Please do not. Tape adhesive and iron-on patches soak into the leather and have to be cleaned out before a proper repair. Leave the tear as it is.

How do I get a price?
